May is Mental Health Awareness Month. It has been a difficult period for many Americans following the September 11 terrorist attacks coupled with the ongoing military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is important that not only physical wounds are attended to, but mental health needs as well. This is especially true for vulnerable populations such as children.
Through our Helping America Cope project, 7-Dippity has played an active role in assisting children and families to cope with their reactions and feelings in the wake of the terrorist attacks and ensuing war on terrorism. Because a child is unlikely to ask for assistance, it is important that parents and other adults who work with children have the ability to recognize when a child needs support.
Our Helping America Cope book assists parents and other adults in:
Easing into the subject of terrorism with children
Understanding children's reactions to recent events
Recognizing signs of distress
Providing some effective coping strategies
Knowing when and where to go for additional help
Providing pertinent information on questions and issues surrounding the aftermath of 9/11
The book was created for use with children 6-12 years of age, however many of the activities and information has effectively been adapted for use with older children as well. Helping America Cope is available in both English and Spanish editions.
